Sketch to Sip: Vizcom at Copenhagen Design Week
For one day during 3DaysofDesign in Copenhagen, Darcy's Cafe ran on a different currency — a sketch. Draw it, we'd render it live in Vizcom, and you'd walk out with a print — coffee included.

For one day during 3DaysofDesign in Copenhagen, the currency at Darcy's Cafe wasn't kroner — it was a sketch. Guests drew anything they wanted, handed it to our team, and watched it turn into a polished, realistic image in real time. While their drinks were being made, we rendered each sketch live in Vizcom and handed back a print of their idea.
Making ideas real
Copenhagen Design Week — 3DaysofDesign brings the city's design community out into its galleries, studios, and cafes every June. We wanted to be part of that in a way that felt hands-on, a little playful, and built around the moment an idea becomes real.
So we partnered with Darcy's Cafe located in Copenhagen Contemporary, and hosted Sketch to Sip— a live activation where a drawing was the ticket to a coffee.

The sketch table
Guests had two ways in: sketch anything, or pull a prompt card if they wanted a nudge. The prompts leaned playful — sketch your favorite mode of transportation, sketch a hybrid animal, sketch a fun hat, and gave anyone who froze up in front of a blank card something to run with.
Plenty of people skipped the prompts and drew straight from their own lives: a dream dress, a chair for an apartment they were still furnishing, a cartoon character they imagined. Others took the cards and ran further than we expected — half-animal creatures, hats that would never survive real life, cars and vehicles no one's built yet.

From sketch to real
Once a sketch was handed over, it went straight into Vizcom. We snapped a picture of the sketches and dropped them into our workbenches.
We then worked with each artist to render the sketches, defining materials, sharing, lighting, environments in our Modify block.
What guests saw on screen a few seconds later was still unmistakably their sketch, just brought to life.

Printing the Sketches
Every render came home with the guest who made it. We ran Instax Link Wide printers at the table, so each finished piece printed on the spot and glued onto the back of the sketch card. This left guests with something physical to walk away with.

Coffee on us
After all the hard work of getting their idea onto the page, guests walked up to the counter and handed their sketch straight to the barista to place their order. Over the 6 hours of the event, over 250 sketches were traded.

Try it yourself
You don't need a cafe table in Copenhagen to see what a sketch can become — just a drawing and a few seconds. Vizcom is free to start: signup, upload a photo of any sketch, add a prompt, and see it rendered.
If you were at Darcy's Cafe and shared your before-and-after, tag us — @vizcom_ on Instagram, and we'd love to see it out in the world.
